The story of one ITE institution’s journey into the global dimension

Local work with Cumbria University   - London Campus 2005 – 2008  

What are we trying to achieve?

To embed a focus on the global dimension in all initial teacher training courses (undergraduate and postgraduate) taught at the University of Cumbria’s London campus.

To enable university staff to deliver training on the global dimension which is integrated into specific curriculum areas.

  Year 1 2005

  • One day input from HEC on ‘what is the global dimension?’ and ‘how to integrate the global dimension across the curriculum.

 Year 2: 2006

  • One day input from HEC on ‘what is the global dimension?’ and ‘how to integrate the global dimension across the curriculum.
  • PGCE students on placement in school – to teach a global theme of a week across all curriculum areas. (Outcomes from the placement are monitored and evaluated by University and HEC staff)

 Year 3: 2007Spring term:

  • Two days input from HEC on ‘what is the global dimension?’ and ‘how to integrate the global dimension across the curriculum.

  • PGCE students on placement in school – to teach a global theme of a week across all curriculum areas. (Outcomes from the placement are monitored and evaluated by University and HEC staff)

 Primary PGCESpring Term:

  • Input from Peter Batty and Botanica – a global simulation game
    This was presented as a cross curricular tool for exploring global issues in class

  • Two days input from HEC on ‘what is the global dimension?’ and ‘how to integrate the global dimension across the curriculum.

  • Input from Association of Science Education (ASE) to students

  • PGCE students on placement in school – to teach a global theme of a week across all curriculum areas. (Outcomes from the placement are monitored and evaluated by University staff)

 Summer Term:Staff development:

  • Units of work for PGCE primary science strand at Cumbria developed through collaboration between the University staff and ASE.

 Year 4: 2008Autumn Term:

  • Session on global dimension as a cross curricular theme delivered in first week of Primary PGCE course.

  • Units on science and the global dimension delivered in Autumn term to PGCE students. Sessions taught by university’s science tutor. The content of sessions picks up on overarching themes addressed in the first session delivered by HEC

 Spring Term:Primary PGCE course

  • Input from Peter Batty and Botanica (as previous year)

  • Sessions on using P4C and OSDE
    (Delivered by University staff) as tools to explore global issues

  • PGCE students on placement in school – to teach a global theme of a week across all curriculum areas – with a focus on the creative curriculum. (Outcomes from the placement are monitored and evaluated by University staff)

 BA QTS course

  • Module offered and taught to second year students on BA QTS Primary course as a strand of Professional studies

 Mod Flex GTP course

  • Input from University of Cumbria Tutor on global dimension on Professional Studies course

  Summer Term:

  • Meet with University staff to discuss delivery of GD in 2009 to include more staff development.

  • Co-author article commissioned by ESCATE for their BUSY TEACHERS TRAINERS GUIDE with Head of University of Cumbria London campus and PGCE student.
