HEC Global Schools
Global schools is one of several whole-school change projects that are being run in schools around the UK in collaboration with Development Education Centres.
Global schools incorporate the global dimension into the school ethos; have curriculum based work that includes global issues; and there is awareness among all school staff and pupils of the importance of the global dimension in educating children and young people effectively for the future.

What are we trying to achieve?
HEC is implementing the Global schools project with Bowes Primary School We are in the first year of work with both the school of what is a two to three year process of making changes. The work involves delivering staff training on how global issues can be integrated into different curriculum areas and then providing advice and support on how to make changes where necessary.
How will we organise learning?
HEC has worked with the school's global coordinator to plan and deliver two staff training session on the global dimension. These focused on what the global dimension is, what a global school might look like and how to integrate global issues into curriculum planning. Following these input session class teachers planned and delivered a unit of work that linked to the global dimension.
How well are achieving out aims?
Staff at the school are evaluating the experience of the new planning and reflecting on the pupils' levels of engagement. This feedback will then feed into how the next stage of the project is developed in terms of embedding the global dimension more deeply into their practice.

St. Mary Magdalene Academy ISLINGTON
At St. Mary Magdalene Academy in Islington the subject specialism is Humanities and Global Citizenship. It is a joint primary and secondary school which runs from Reception to Year 7 and will - as it expands each year eventually run to Year 13.
What are we trying to achieve?
The Academy will, with support from HEC, design and deliver a curriculum which explicitly engages with the global dimension.
How will we organise learning?
HEC is working with the school to design their curriculum for Years 7 and 8 to be focused around four global themes: Diversity, Sustainable Development, Conflict Resolution, and Social Justice across all subject areas. The way this will work is for specific subjects areas to look at how and when they can link content they are planning to focus on these themes. This is very exciting and innovative work as the school is design these curriculum units for the first time - ready to be delivered from September 2008. Since this is the first academy of its kind it is a unique opportunity for HEC and the school to work collaboratively to create a global curriculum.
How well are achieving out aims?
HEC has had a number of meetings with school staff to plan actions to take forward. We have also delivered a training session for staff during which they had to consider how to link their curriculum area to the four key themes being focused on. Staff are now planning their units of work, HEC will then work with staff to advise on resources where necessary. Once the teaching of the units is underway staff will monitor and evaluate.
