As part of the Global Schools initiative WEDG has been supporting staff with training and resources for their whole-school approach to the global dimension.
Climate Change conference at the Marlowe Academy
In October 2008 WEDG organised a mini-conference on Climate Change, for Marlowe Academy staff and other invited teachers from our ‘Family of Schools'. This was a very informative event, providing a range of ideas and resources to use in the classroom. It allowed us to talk to teachers from other key stages and assess the knowledge of students who will be entering our school in the future.
When we had the opportunity to plan how we would teach about climate change in our schools, the Marlowe Academy Humanities and Science staff worked together to sketch out a collaborative scheme of work. We are intending to deliver this to Year 7 in the summer term. This should allow us to cover the science behind the topic as well as create an understanding of active citizenship within our students.

‘It would be difficult to over-estimate the impact that our association with WEDG has had on our efforts to enrich students' lives and raise their aspirations. They have supported a variety of events including our Fair Trade Friday and contribution to World Food Day. They have also supported with weekly assembly themes and resources for tutor sessions, this contribution all the more effective as it was based upon a detailed needs analysis of our priorities for developing the global dimension in school. More detailed work with Citizenship and Geography teachers has also further enriched our curriculum. The Academy recently won the prestigious 'Creating the Future Award' from the Academy for Sustainable Communities. This would not have been possible if our curriculum and approach had been inward looking and sterile. WEDG has rapidly become an integral part of our multi agency approach to learning and student development. ‘

Theme of the Week
Staff at the Marlowe Academy identified the weekly theme as an initial way of highlighting the global dimension to all teachers and students.
‘WEDG has provided the Marlowe Academy with a fully resourced Theme of the Week package. These have all had a global dimension to them and have provided an opportunity for all of our students to consider and discuss global issues. As you walk into the school the Theme of the Week is on the first notice board. Each weekly theme has come with a few thought provoking quotes, a basic introductory sheet for the teacher and a series of activity ideas. These packs have been provided to all form tutors to use with their form over the week. They have proved popular as they have enabled teachers to easily adapt the theme to the correct level of their class. They have allowed the students to discuss global issues with their peers as well as an interested adult. These themes have then been picked up on during whole school and year group assemblies, thus showing the students the same theme in a wide variety of contexts.'
