Early Years Project and trainee teachers at Canterbury Christ Church University
In February 2007 a lunchtime meeting was held between the project worker and a Year 2 teacher to discuss a visitor coming into the class to talk about growing up in Russia during a whole school International Week. During the course of the meeting the teacher was asked how she had learnt about WEDG and it emerged that a student teacher on placement in her class had mentioned the organisation and bought in WEDG literature when they had discussed preparations for the International Week. The student remembered a session from WEDG about an Early Years project at the University in October
The face to face meeting with the Year 2 teacher resulted in the loan of appropriate resources for the International Week and the project worker was able to draw attention to other services that might be useful.
Subsequently the teacher requested an assembly from WEDG during their Environment Week which was delivered to approximately 180 children and 6 staff. The assembly concentrated on presenting a positive image of different African countries through looking at recycled toys and everyday objects and the creative skills and thinking involved. At the request of the teachers present the items were loaned to the school for further study by the children.
Excellent contact has now been made with the school and the credentials of WEDG established. The school can now be approached with a view to further strategic initiatives.
This exemplifies how connections are made and unanticipated outcomes emerge. It reflects the constantly evolving and organic nature of the work of a DEC.
