London and South East England Regions

Teachers and other educators building a learning community for the global dimension

Overview 2010 and beyond

Peas on EarthThe stories of Local4Global work by schools, universities and local authorities have been updated and some now trace a three or four year period of reflection, action and evaluation. Recent highlights have been added to the Outcomes section.
In 2009 DFID, the funding department for Local4Global, reviewed its funding for the education systems in the UK including the Development Awareness Fund and Enabling Effective Support. It is proposed to bring these streams together in a new programme to operate at a national, regional and local level. The current contract funding Local4Global ends in August 2010 and there will be a continuation of activities by schools, universities, local authorities and national bodies beyond that time.
DFID has issued details including a pre-qualifying questionnaire and the terms of reference for the new Global Learning Project in England. Four Invitation to Tenders (ITT) have been issued with a deadline at the beginning of July and an appointment to prepare a proposal for the programme will be announced later. The timetable from DFID now appears to suggest an announcement will be made in late-October on the initial contract for base-line work to start in early-December.
Local4Global considers that it is vital for key elements of the regional and local implementation to be carried forward in the new project. This view is most effectively conveyed in a jointly produced document called "Reflections on EES" submitted by the EES Coordinators to DFID on 12 January 2010. It may be downloaded here >> [Word 78kb]
A further document, called 'successful approaches', providing an overview of the regional programme evaluations (2008-2009) is available here >> [PDF 514 kb]
The Local4Global website points to valuable work that needs to be taken into account.
