Schools Library Service
In most authorities, your school librarian and your Schools Library Service are your key to finding good resources to teach the global dimension.
Schools Library Services provide a range of resources to support the curriculum, including the global dimension and have expert staff who identify and buy quality resources on a regular basis and who can advise you.
Click here to find out if your authority has a schools library service you can contact. If your authority does not have a schools library service, you can go to a neighbouring authority or you can ask your public library for assistance.
Identifying good resources
New books and resources are being published all the time. There are several ways of finding out:
1. RISC (Reading international Solidarity Centre) publishes a regular "e-resources news" that gives you information on what is new. Contact liz@risc.org.uk to be added to the mailing list. You can then ask your school librarian or the schools library service if you can borrow the resources on this list.
2. Look at the resources pages on the Oxfam website. They reference resources from a range of agencies and organisations.
3. www.globaldimension.org.uk provides a database of resources to search. The Global Dimension website is a helpful guide to books, films, posters and websites with a global dimension. From climate change to poverty, water to fair trade, you can find resources for all age groups and subjects.
4. Tower Hamlets Schools Library Service has created a link to lists of resources, including picture books, which you may already have in your school, library or schools library service, relating to the eight key concepts. This is a library catalogue, so use it to identify good resources and then use Amazon.co.uk or one of the links above to see if they are available to buy. Other schools library services might offer a similar service - Click here to find the SLS in your area.
